A Farewell to Paulo Pinheiro de Andrade

Together with Eugenia Paesani, Paulo was a driving force of Latin American (research) involvement at a global level, and Paulo especially was an active supporter of ESOMAR and a promoter of its involvement in the LATAM region. A “founding father” of the insights industry in his native Brazil, Paulo was instrumental in leading IBOPE to become a regional and global powerhouse in public opinion research, audience measurement and consumer research, and with that international perspective, he played a key role in globalizing the role of ESOMAR. Paulo was a great believer in the importance of associations, and was a key supporter of ESOMAR, ABEP and latterly ARIA, throughout his career.
Originally born to a family of diplomats, Paulo decided instead to follow a career in Market Research. As Alex Guarnica mentioned in his obituary, Brazil’s loss of a promising foreign service candidate was our profession’s gain in securing a unique ambassador.
I first met Paulo when I joined ESOMAR in 2009; he was then serving his third term on Council and his global vision was as strong then, as it was when he started on Council. Notwithstanding his decision to forego his family’s foreign service legacy, Paulo was a great diplomat which helped significantly in bringing the right spirit to the involvement of the Latin countries to the global world. Furthermore, he was an extremely amiable person who showed a personal interest in his relationships both at a professional and personal level.
Our industry has lost a great researcher, an avid supporter and a strong ambassador. We extend our thoughts and sincere condolences to his family and friends in this difficult time.
