5 reasons to come to Amsterdam for ESOMAR’s 2023 Congress!
Amsterdam is known for its liberalism, tolerance, and quality of life. The city hosts a large number of international conferences every year, drawing travellers wanting to experience the best that Amsterdam has to offer. As one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations due to its beautiful and compact streets, rich culture, and vibrant nightlife, there are many reasons why you should visit ESOMAR’s hometown.
1 - Amsterdam is a major business hub
Amsterdam’s history as an international business centre can be traced back to the Golden Age in the 1600s when Dutch merchants travelled the trade routes to Asia and brought spices and exotic goods back to Europe. This active history of international trade means that an outward-looking attitude and familiarity with foreign business are deeply ingrained in the Dutch mentality. Such an attitude makes businesses and government support expats doing business in their capital - and the international opportunities it creates.
2 - Exploring the canals
Cruising the canals is the best way to see Amsterdam. The city’s more than one hundred kilometres or more than 62 miles of canals date back to the 17th century when Amsterdam was the wealthiest city in Europe and one of its busiest ports. Today these waterways are used for everything from daily commutes to sightseeing. Make sure to book a boat tour or a cruise dinner when you are in town. You won’t regret it.
3 - Getting around by bike
For the adventurous, biking is a fun way to see a city. Biking is a popular mode of transportation in Amsterdam. With more than 800,000 bikes on the road, it outnumbers people in the city. Every summer, Amsterdam hosts a World Naked Bike Ride to promote body positivity and raise awareness of toxic emissions in urban areas. But every day provides an opportunity to enjoy the sights on two wheels. Biking through Amsterdam is a must for any visitor; be sure to watch out for trams, cars, and people walking around.
4 - Art and Museum Heaven
Amsterdam is home to a myriad of museums and art galleries, including the Rijksmuseum (the national museum), which houses one of the world’s finest collections of works by the Dutch Masters, including Rembrandt, Hals, Vermeer, and Steen. Here you can view ‘The Night Watch’ by Rembrandt, which was recently agreed to be given the painting back to the museum after ten years of renovations. If art is not your thing, Amsterdam has a wide range of museums to suit all tastes: here, you can find torture and execution museums, sex museums, wax museums, cannabis-herb museums, condom factories and museums dedicated to the human body. You can take your pick!
